10th Week of the Fall CSA: Week of December 22nd

*Because Friday is Christmas Eve, there will be no Friday bags for Rutland or Ludlow this week.*

Cuteness overload: can you find the baby goat in a diaper?

Farm News

If you normally get a pre-packed, delivered bag on Fridays, please note that this week, due to the Co-op (Rutland) and the Realty office (Ludlow) being closed for Christmas Eve, we will only have pre-packed bags available at the barn and Stewart’s on Friday. We will still deliver to all the normal spots on Wednesday, so either plan for a Wednesday delivery to your preferred pickup spot, order a bag for Friday at the barn or Stewart’s, or come to the barn this week on Wednesday or Thursday to select your own items.

Fun fact: the fall share isn’t over this week! I know we usually take a pause during the holiday time, but this year there are still two more weeks to the fall share after this week. The last fall share week is January 5th-7th, so stay tuned next week for more veggies.

And hopefully you got an email midweek about the winter/spring CSA share signup. In case you missed it, you can sign up now. Some folks have asked why the new software platform asks for more information than we have collected in the past (such as address and phone number): we have tried to get Farmigo to change the information their platform has you fill in, but they aren’t able to make that change. We only need your name and email address when you sign up, so please feel free to use the farm’s address and phone number if you don’t want to enter your own. (And if you already did sign up, but would rather not have your information in there, send me an email, I can change your phone and address to the farm’s, so the account only has your email on file.)

This week in cute, fun, cuddly news, we started babysitting a super sweet baby goat, Waggy, from our friends over at Squire Family Farm. Dozens of their does are kidding, and Waggy was born significantly smaller than her twin and became hypothermic fast, needing to move inside their home and get regular bottle feedings until she is big and strong enough to move back outside with the rest of the goats. We were looking for ways to give our own kids more responsibility these days, and the Squires (like most farms) have too much on their plates, so Meadow is letting us have Waggy until she is ready to head home to the herd. Our (human) kids are obviously loving it, our dogs have always been nurturing buddies to any of our own baby goats who have had to have stints inside, and the crew is also over the moon! (Who doesn’t love a snuggly, tiny baby goat in a diaper by the woodstove that you feed a tiny bottle?)

Ryan is deep into the seed order, and I am starting to set up our pre-ordered plant sales. It is incredibly fun to pick out all the summer-inspired plants we will start in the greenhouse for other people’s gardens. Tweaking amounts and dates is still a bit of a game, assuming my notes from the previous season are legible after living too long in the propagation house last spring. We hope to have that up and ready for orders some time in January.

We hope you have a great holiday week ahead for those who celebrate,

-ESF Team: Kara, Ryan, Morgan, Cindy, Taylor, Molly, Elana, and Katie
