6th Week of Winter CSA: March 3–5
This week I seeded 720 tomato plants! These will be the first 4 rows that will be the first flush of the earlist tomatoes. It’s a ways off still, but putting those seeds into dirt in the grow room feels like summer is on its way to enjoy tomatoes with names like Solar Flare, Gin Fiz, Cuba Libre, Rebelski, Jackpot, Manero, and Be Orange.
5th Week of Winter CSA: Feb 24–26
Last week we transplanted lots of baby greens in the understory of the mature kale plants in the tunnel. As the spring marches forward the kale plants will eventually produce smaller and fewer leaves, making more space for the salad greens underneath to grow. When we are ready to take the kale plants out, the greens underneath are nearly ready for their first harvest themselves.
4th Week of Winter CSA: Feb 17–19
Ah! This blog post was deleted! What a bummer! I roughly recreated just a portion of it, as I have been enjoying learning and compiling bits of information about agricultural Black history this month. Alas, it’s far less refined and thorough than the original post.
3rd Week of Winter CSA: Feb 10–12
The grow room continues to see new seedlings emerge, waiting their turn to be transplanted out when space becomes available as greens get harvested from the high tunnel. And the pile of storage crops in the root cellar continues to diminish each week.
2nd Week of Winter CSA: Feb 3–5
We transplanted baby bok choi, salad turnips, radishes, and tokyo bekana last week to start replacing some of the harvested out greens in the tunnels. This specific planting won’t be ready for awhile (probably for the spring share), but they help bridge some gaps as we continue to harvest out winter greens before outdoor greens are ready. Year round farming requires constant seed starting and transplanting.
1st Week of Winter CSA: Jan 27–29
Thanks for Joining the Winter CSA! Every first week of a CSA season there is a lot of important information in here to read about how to get your veggies. This newsletter contains essential information about limits on greens availability, what vegetables you can expect, barn pickup hours, and order deadlines/pickup locations for delivered bags. The link to fill out an order form for delivered bags is at the end of all this information. Even if you don’t read most newsletters, read this one.
